Cigna Announces Update to Payment Policy on Multiple Procedures
On May 25, the Health Care Insurance carrier Cigna announced an update to their policy on payment for multiple procedures provided on the same day of service. The May update came within a month of medical societies, including ISASS, requesting that Cigna immediately rescind the policy that would have required physicians to submit office notes verifying a significant and separately identifiable service with all claims, including evaluation and management Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes 99212, 99213, 99214, and 99215 and modifier 25. ISASS and the other signatories believe this policy is inconsistent with CPT instruction and guidance. In their request, the medical societies cited current CPT and Medicare instructions on separately identifiable services.
