ISASS Requests Updated Diagnosis Codes for Spine Surgery Patients
On March 10, 2023, ISASS participated in a public forum to request new International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision (ICD-10), Clinical Modification codes for conditions often treated by spine surgeons. Dr. Morgan Lorio, Chair of the ISASS Coding and Reimbursement Task Force, presented the request during the CDC/CMS March 2023 ICD-10 Maintenance Committee meeting.
Dr. Lorio indicated the lack of diagnosis codes for multi-symptomatic spine conditions such as low back pain with lower leg pain and the need for more granularity to the ICD diagnostic codes set in this area. He emphasized that if accepted, the requested changes would further enable and enhance research and tracking of multi-symptomatic spine conditions and increase innovation, allowing for higher quality, cost-effective spine care.
If accepted, the new codes would go into effect in 2024.
