Surgical Societies Issue Statement Against Spine Surgery by Non-Surgeons

Eight spine organizations collaborated on a position statement on the performance of arthrodesis on the spine by non-surgical providers. The organizations were led by ISASS and included the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), the Scoliosis Research Society, the Cervical Spine Research Society, the Lumbar Spine Research Society, and the AANS/CNS Spine Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves.

The statement firmly argues for the importance of the unique training and diagnostic and surgical skills of spine surgeons in determining when surgery is appropriate and in performing arthrodesis of the spine.
