US House of Representatives Passes Legislation to Expand Scope of Practice for Non-Physician Providers

On June 7, 2022, the U.S. House of Representatives approved bill HR6087, Improving Access to Workers’ Compensation for Injured Federal Workers Act.

This bill expands the type of providers authorized to diagnose, treat, prescribe and certify injuries and extent of disability for Federal Employees to allow Non-Physician Providers such as Nurse Practitioners (NP) and Physician Assistants (PA) to provide these services without physician supervision.

The AMA and other medical specialties have opposed such legislation as undermining patient care quality and not increasing access.

The bill has not been passed or taken up by the U.S. Senate.
